What Am I Eating?
Max Original Series

A premium series built around curiosity.
What Am I Eating? with Zooey Deschanel is a six-part Max Original blending documentary filmmaking, science, culture, humor, and highly designed educational storytelling.
When the creative changed, post became the solution.
Each episode contained two approximately three-minute “Explainer” segments. The original concept was photographed practically on a grocery-store set, but the visual approach did not meet executive expectations. With talent availability, budget, and schedule all constraining the options, the team pivoted: talent was refilmed on green screen and the explainers were rebuilt as virtual environments through design and animation.
The solution made the series more visually distinctive, but it also substantially increased post complexity.
Scale the workflow without losing the idea.
Gerry led post-production strategy and execution across all six episodes, overseeing editorial, design, animation, VFX, color, sound, finishing, client and director reviews, and delivery. The team included six editors, two designers, four animators, an assistant editor, colorist, audio mixer, post supervisor, and animation director.
Editorial and animation budgets, creative reviews, vendors, and finishing were aligned around a unified post strategy so the expanded animation scope could be absorbed while keeping the series on schedule and on budget.
The production problem became part of the show's identity.
The virtual explainer approach ultimately gave the series a more memorable and distinctive visual language. The completed six-episode series was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Culinary Program.
The finished series paired live-action storytelling with a bright graphic system and animation-heavy educational sequences.
